Librarian: Tidy Up the Arcane Library! - REVIEW

Fun casual game if you are into this sort of genre. The gameplay is simple, you are a librarian and have to clean the library that was left in a disarray by a mischievous fairy. You pick up books, try to figure out what genre they are and using maps on the walls return it to the correct shelf unit.

Each shelf is one series of books, they can be in volumes of 3, 5 and 10. Once you put together a whole sets you start to level up, with levels becoming harder to come by. With each level up you can unlock and then upgrade one of your abilities:

  • Highlighting a shelf to which the book goes to
  • Highlight books on the ground from the same series
  • Call books from the same series right into your hand
  • Order books in your hand by volume number
  • If you are standing next to the correct shelve unit automatically put away the books

These abilities make you a lot faster then in the beginning. Additionally there are 4 keys around unlocking few more useful features: running, jumping and allowing you to carry up to 15 books in total (from the original 10) again speeding up your cleaning process.

There are few achievements to get. Apart from 3 you can basically get all of them on your very first blind play through. From the 3 the easiest one to get is to just put the books on the shelves randomly. The second is putting the books on the shelves correctly but in under 3 hours, once you do at least one run before hand and can recognize at least some of the more distinct looking books it is fairly easy. Important is to level up as soon as possible to unlock highlighting books on the ground, following by the book recall. The last achievement is the most time consuming, it is to put the books on the shelves correctly, but without using any of the major magic abilities. At this point you will know where the keys are located so you can move around faster, but it was still a very slow process and more so if you do not know where the books go still.

And that is basically it for the gameplay. I am personally not into this type of game, but I got all of the achievements. I don't think the game offers any replay value after that unless you intend to speedrun it, but I can understand that some people will find it enjoyable to pick up all the books over and over again.

There are some updates planned which should add some additional modes most likely. I might revisit it then.

For around 6 euro, the game delivered exactly what was advertised. You can feel that it is an indie game, especially the jumping mechanic feels slightly off but it is manageable. There were some very minor graphical glitches under linux where some textures of the shelves were clipping into the ceilings, but other then that the game looks good. Some of the book names are also very funny.
